Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman

Emotions

Do you ever get the feeling that you're the only one on the planet with feelings? Does it sometimes seem as though your life is at the mercy of your moods? Does everyone around you seem to be cruising along just fine with their emotional barrier up, making it difficult for you to connect with them, and leaving you feeling like there's something wrong with you? Do you feel out of place because you're a man, and men aren't supposed to have feelings; or do you feel that because you're a woman with feelings, you're playing second fiddle to the cold, hard men that rule the planet?

Not Everyone is Going To Like You

Relationships

Ever since I was a kid, I've felt a burning desire to have other people like me; to be accepted. It's not unusual to want to fit in with other people, and perhaps you can relate. Often when I didn't feel accepted by other people, I thought the problem lay with me. But a recent interaction with a rather extreme neighbour was an opportunity in disguise to learn otherwise.

About Me
Home Home Home Home

Prior to becoming a Life Coach, I had a successful 20 year career in EngineeringEngineering initially working at companies like Canon and Cochlear, and later running my own consulting business. While I initially found this a tremendously rewarding extension of my childhood hobby, I eventually burned out and lost interest. The creative/emotional side of my brain was crying out for attention and I found I wanted deeper relationships than seemed to be available professionally in the Engineering environment. I stopped caring any more, and work went from being a joy into being a nightmare. I have long been fascinated by personal growth and development, and had 9 years prior experience as a volunteer telephone counsellor with Lifeline. So rather than stay in a job where I was depressed, I decided to change career, become a Life Coach. That way I could help other people to have a great life and pass on what I continued to learn on my own journey.

A Mantra to Live by

 E-mail
November 2008

I recently came across a copy of Rotary Down Under, the magazine of the service club Rotary in Australia. In it, I found The Four Way Test, which I thought sounded like a good mantra to live by. It goes as follows:

  1. Is it the truth?
  2. Is it fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Try applying the Four Way Test in all your interactions with other people, and let me know how it goes!

Congratulations to the U.S.A!

November 2008

I felt a sense of pride in humanity when I heard the outcome of the latest U.S. Presidential elections. Who would have thought the first African-American president would be elected to replace the regime which presided over the horrendous invasion of Iraq, and the near-collapse of the U.S. financial system?

All I can say is: Congratulations to the U.S.A! You've not only changed your President, you've changed the world for the better.
